Residents across Stoke-on-Trent are reminded that they can still sign up to continue with their brown bin collections through the winter as part of a new service offered by the city council.
2860 gardeners have already signed up to the scheme, which started when the ‘normal’ brown bin collections ended in October.
The council collects brown bins – free of charge – between April and October, and approximately 19,000 tonnes of garden waste is collected each year, but residents who tend their gardens through the winter months have previously had to take their garden waste to the tip or compost it at home.
Now, for a one-off charge of £15 per bin per season, green-fingered residents can receive collections throughout the winter months, until ‘normal’ collections start again on Easter Monday, offering great value for money at less than £1.40 per collection (based on 11 collections).
Councillor Carl Edwards, cabinet member for Housing and Environment said: “Around 94,000 households in the city have a brown bin, and whilst it isn’t a statutory service for the council to remove garden waste – we know how much this means to our residents.”
“We received requests to collect the garden waste throughout the year, but in order to do that, we have to make a small charge to cover the costs of collecting and disposing of the waste.
“More than half the councils across the country now make a charge for all brown bin collections – but we will continue to offer this service at no cost between April-October.”
Residents signing up to the new service will receive collections every two weeks (with the exception of the Christmas break), on the same weekday as their household recycling bin collection. People can join the scheme at www.stoke.gov.uk/gardenwaste and make their payment online, and their application will be processed within 10 days.
They can subscribe to the service at any point during the year, but the cost will remain the same, and collections will only be made from residents who currently have a brown bin.
Residents not signing up to the scheme will have their brown bin collection starting again w/c 18 April 2022.
