The result has been declared in a by-election for the Moorcroft ward of Stoke-on-Trent. Counting took place this morning following an election yesterday.

The result has been declared in a by-election for a seat on Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

Counting took place this morning (Friday) following an election yesterday (Thursday) in the Moorcroft ward of the city.

The result has seen the election of Tariq Mahmood as the new city councillor for the ward.

A total of three candidates contested the seat, with a total of 1,564 votes cast and a turnout of 39.39 per cent.

The breakdown of the result is:

Tariq Mahmood, Conservatives, 769 votes

Javid Najmi, Labour, 702 votes

Andy Butcher, Trade Union and Socialist Coalition, 77 votes

There are 44 seats on the city council. The by-election result means the authority is now made up of 20 Conservative, 13 Labour, six City Independents and five non-aligned councillors.

An election for the Staffordshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner took place across the county yesterday (Thursday). The count for this election will take place from 1pm today (Friday) and will be declared by East Staffs Borough Council.
