Stoke-on-Trent City Council is urging all who are eligible to get their flu, Covid-19 and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) vaccines to protect themselves this winter.

The call follows a rise in flu and RSV cases, with hospitalisation rates and positive tests both increasing.

Stephen Gunther, corporate director of public health at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: “The colder weather means we are seeing increases in the number of people with flu and RSV, and getting vaccinated helps protect against serious illnesses and boosts your immunity.

“Christmas is around the corner and the increased socialising indoors with family and friends increases the risk of these viruses spreading.

“I encourage everybody who is eligible to have their vaccines and don’t miss out on enjoying the festivities.”

Those eligible for the flu vaccine include those who are:

  • aged 65 or over
  • living with certain long-term health conditions
  • pregnant
  • living in a care home
  • the main carer for an older or disabled person, or receiving a carer's allowance
  • living with someone who has a weakened immune system

The RSV vaccine helps reduce the risk of serious breathing problems like pneumonia and bronchiolitis. It is recommended for those who are pregnant or aged between 75 and 79.

Covid-19 remains a risk within our communities, meaning those eligible should get this vaccine as well to provide the best possible protection.

Councillor Lynn Watkins, cabinet member for health and wellbeing at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: “With these increases in rates, it is vital that all those who are eligible get their vaccines to provide the best possible protection against serious illness.

“Even if you have had these vaccines before, immunity fades over time, so keeping yourself vaccinated will mean you are more likely to have milder symptoms and recover faster.”
