Stoke-on-Trent City Council celebrates 10 years of working towards being an ‘age-friendly city’ as it marks the United Nations International Day of Older People.

In 2014, Stoke-on-Trent City Council joined the Global Network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities, a network that works alongside more than 1,000 communities and cities covering forty countries, and with a joint affiliation to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The city council is proud to support the Stoke-on-Trent based, Beth Johnson Foundation, which has helped build the global network with fundraising and campaigning activity.

The Beth Johnson Foundation is a charity based in Hartshill, Stoke-on-Trent, and campaigns to make society more age friendly.

It drives forward initiatives such as ensuring that older people have access to digital skills to feel included in society, and offers packages of support to those with age related conditions such as dementia.

Formed in 1972, it was named in honour of Beth Johnson, who devoted much of her life towards helping older people live a more engaged life in Stoke-on-Trent as well as across the UK.

A Beth Johnson charity spokesperson said: “We are so pleased that Stoke-on-Trent City Council is a partner in this important initiative. We want everyone to enjoy a great later life and by listening to and learning from older people, and sharing stories of ageing, we can all work together to help build a future for all ages.  Ultimately we share the voices of older people and push for positive changes in our communities.”

Councillor Duncan Walker, cabinet member for adult services said: “Initiatives such as #IDOP24 offer an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of our mission to become an all-age friendly city here in Stoke-on-Trent and all of the support and help available through working with our partners.

“The day represents a chance to show our gratitude for all of the contributions older people make in their community.”

The United Nations first announced on 14 December 1990 that they would commemorate the International Day of Older People each year on 1 October, starting in 1991.
