Council leader responds to disorder in the city
Stoke-on-Trent City Council leader Jane Ashworth said: “Hate will not be tolerated in our city. The events from the weekend and the violent behaviour associated goes against everything we stand for in Stoke-on-Trent. This violence undermines the power of our city and the strength of our communities. People have been left divided and frightened by the actions of a small minority of people.
“Thank you to Staffordshire Police for their unwavering commitment to the safety of our residents and for their swift actions and diligent efforts to identify the perpetrators.
“We are a city renowned for its kindness, a place where people from all backgrounds live together harmoniously. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to residents, faith leaders and businesses who have expressed their dismay at what has happened and have offered to help in any way they can. Your kindness and willingness to assist are greatly appreciated.
“We are aware of the national spotlight on our city right now for all the wrong reasons. We are continuing to work closely with our colleagues at Staffordshire Police to share intelligence and ensure the safety of our communities. I would urge people to continue their daily lives and not respond to social media speculation.
“Our message remains clear: those who spread hate are not welcome in our city.”
