Following its launch on Tuesday, May 7, Highway teams from Stoke-on-Trent City Council have gone full throttle on repairing road defects across the city.

After a particularly wet winter and soggy spring, the city’s roads have been battered and become damaged. The city council has been working to repair defects and use prevention methods ahead of the changing seasons.

Since Tuesday, 7 May, teams have repaired just shy of 5000 defects.

Councillor Amjid Wazir OBE, cabinet member for City Pride, Enforcement and Sustainability advised: “One of the main points residents raise is the condition of our roads. We want to reassure residents this issue is one of our top priorities. Our teams are responsible for over 617 miles of road and are working to ensure they are in top condition with a permanent or preventative repair.”

Councillor Finlay Gordon-McCusker, cabinet member for Transport, Infrastructure and Regeneration has said, “I am incredibly proud of the teams who continue to make a positive impact to keep the city moving. This work is essential for our infrastructure, and I thank the staff who are working hard to improve our roads, as well as residents for their continued patience as we carry out our programme.”

“The work’s not over yet, and while the repairs continue, we are also planning the preventative works to commence in August ahead of the colder, wetter seasons.”

In June, the Highways Team was awarded Best Council Services Team at the MJ Awards, further testament to the dedication they provide across the city and internally—excelling in enhanced safety, skill development, employee well-being, efficiency, and community enrichment.

Following much-needed investment from Government, emergency and preventative repairs are being prioritised. Government funding for 2024/25 has totalled a little over £2million. This includes additional funding via Network North, following the cancellation of HS2.
