Stoke-on-Trent Lord Mayor helps to raise £14,000 for local good causes

Cllr Khan has presented a cheque to his three chosen charities Published: Friday, 19th July 2024

Three charities have been awarded a share of £14,000 thanks to the fundraising efforts of Stoke-on-Trent’s former Lord Mayor.

During the 12-month period Councillor Majid Khan was in office, between 25 May 2023 and 16 May 2024, he managed to raise thousands of pounds for his chosen charities; Savana, Stoke-on-Trent Foodbank and Stoke-on-Trent Aiming High.

Fundraising events included an afternoon tea, a five-a-side football tournament and a charity curry night.

Councillor Khan said: “I am so pleased that we have been able to raise so much money for my three chosen charities which is testament to how our city always comes together.

“I would like to say a big thank you to the generous and caring people of Stoke-on-Trent for their donations and support over the year. I would also like to thank my three daughters for supporting me as Lady Mayoress and my family.”

“I really enjoyed being Lord Mayor for a second time and just because I am no longer Lord Mayor doesn’t mean the support stops, I will continue to support these causes and do as much as I can, as I hope our local communities will.”

Savana support victims of sexual assault and sexual violence while Stoke-on-Trent Foodbank provides emergency food and support to local families in crisis and Stoke-on-Trent Aiming High works to improve the lives of young children with disabilities or additional needs.

Sophia Baker, chief executive officer at Savana, said: “Having the support of the Lord Mayor makes such a significant difference to survivors of sexual violence from across Stoke-on-Trent.

“We have to raise a million pounds a year to keep our doors open so that we can offer specialist counselling, practical support and prevention work in schools.

“This fundraising has contributed to that but the support extends further as sexual violence and abuse is often a challenging topic to speak about. By supporting a charity such as ours, the Lord Mayor has helped us to break the silence and change lives.”

Corrine Boden MBE, director of services at Stoke-on-Trent Foodbank, said: “We are very grateful to Councillor Khan for all of this support. This donation, and the support we have also received through the Household Support Fund, will go a long way towards helping local families.”

Sarah Bonner, relationship fundraising executive from Action For Children, on behalf of Stoke-on-Trent Aiming High, said: “We are so incredibly grateful for the money received from the Lord Mayor’s fundraising.

“Your generosity will help us to support disabled children and young people to fulfil their full potential. Your donation will have such a huge impact in our mission to ensure that all vulnerable children and young people have a safe and happy childhood and the foundations they need to thrive. A heartfelt thank you from us all.”
