Transformative work to make travel safer for pedestrians, motorists and cyclists starts next week on Lightwood Road.
The city council is advising Lightwood residents and road users of two roadwork projects that will start on Monday 27 May.
Resurfacing: The stretch between Gravelly Bank and Common Lane will be closed for four nights (Tuesday 28 – Friday 31 inclusive) from 7pm to 6am while contractors resurface the road. Road users will be diverted around the closure.
Traffic calming: Temporary traffic lights will be used at three junctions along Lightwood Road so a number of ‘build outs’ can be installed to narrow parts of the road and reduce speed. Signs will indicate which direction of traffic has priority when approaching them.
The three locations are at the junctions with:
- Ferndown Close
- Castleton Road
- Fir Tree Road
New road markings will be painted by the Belgrave Road roundabout and along Lightwood Road to encourage motorists to reduce their speed.
Councillor Finlay Gordon-McCusker, cabinet member for transport, infrastructure and regeneration, said: “Work to reach our target of fixing 6,000 road defects in the next six months is well underway. This work in Lightwood is part of that work to improve our city’s roads.
“On Lightwood Road, as well as carrying out much-needed resurfacing work, we are making the road safer for all users.
“We have listened to local voices who have called for action to improve safety. We are investing in improving the local infrastructure and improving road safety.
“Our contractors plan to keep disruption to a minimum and have clear signs and information so road users know what is happening and when.”
