Tenants evicted using council powers following anti-social behaviour

Tenants who used their home for anti-social behaviour have been evicted in a serious crack-down by Stoke-on-Trent City Council enforcement teams working with the Police.

The council in partnership with Staffordshire Police responded to numerous complaints and concerns from the public about a property in Beverley Drive, Bentilee being used for illegal drug dealing and causing anti-social behaviour.

The council’s anti-social behaviour team were able to use their powers of possession and reclaim the property.

The council used the Absolute Grounds for Possession, which was introduced by the ASB, Crime and Policing Act 2014 which, subject to certain safeguards, compels the Court to grant possession of a property if a serious offence has been committed by the tenant or a person residing with them.

Councillor David Williams, cabinet member for community safety and resilience, said: “We know the issues with this property were having a detrimental impact on the community and we took action.

“Everybody should be able to feel safe in their local area and we are committed to ensuring that we tackle any type of anti-social behaviour swiftly and successfully with our partners.

“Where there is evidence we will continue to take action like this and by working together in partnership with agencies and local communities we can tackle the root causes of crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour and build a safer, stronger and more confident city.”

Chief Inspector Dave Barrow, of Stoke South local policing team, said: “We hope this demonstrates how we continue to work with partners in the community to tackle the negative impact anti-social behaviour and associated criminality can have on local residents.

“We received a number of reports of drug use and anti-social behaviour at the address which has had a detrimental impact on the lives of those living in the area.

“This type of behaviour will not be tolerated and we hope this result gives some much-needed respite to the local community.”
