A group of top travel writers from Canada are heading to Stoke-on-Trent as part of a VisitBritain press visit, in partnership with Visit Stoke.
Six journalists - including from Postmedia, the largest national syndicate with major dailies in all cities across Canada, and a writer from Canada.com, with an audience of almost two million - will visit Middleport Pottery and Trentham Gardens on Monday 25 July.
Also among the group will be writers from French language magazines and digital media in Canada, along with leading online travel site Vacaynetwork and Black Press Media, which serves regional publications in British Columbia.
Cllr Lorraine Beardmore, cabinet member for culture, leisure and public health said:
“We are delighted to welcome delegates from Visit Britain and a number of top travel writers from Canada to Stoke-on-Trent.
“Our city has a wealth of culture and heritage and I am sure they will get just a glimpse of what we have to offer during their visit.”
The press trip - arranged by VisitBritain, the organisation which promotes the UK to overseas holidaymakers - will give the travel journalists an idea of the welcome visitors can expect at some of the area’s top tourist attractions - and reveal some of the reasons why Stoke-on-Trent is dubbed the “World Capital of Ceramics”.
Along with a chance to try a lunch of Staffordshire oatcakes, the group will be treated to a Middleport Pottery factory tour to see world-famous Burleigh pottery being made using the same traditional methods as in the 1880s, and visiting the city’s newest attraction, How We Lived at Harper Street.
Discovering more about the history and heritage of The Potteries, plus the area’s award-winning museums, attractions, and tours, journalists will also hear how The Potteries became a TV location for Peaky Blinders and learn more about the area’s connections to one of its most famous sons, Arnold Bennett.
Completing the Canadian media’s whistle-stop tour of the area, they will end their afternoon with a quick stop at award-winning Trentham Gardens, for a photo opp at the green oasis on the edge of Stoke-on-Trent.
Visit Stoke has worked with Middleport Pottery and the Trentham Estate to organise the Stoke-on-Trent element of the media visit, which has been timed to coincide with the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
The group will also be visiting Birmingham and other West Midlands destinations, as well as taking in a tour of the Chatsworth Estate during their time in the UK.
