If you are looking to sell, store or give away food, you must register your food business establishment.
This applies to the following businesses:
- Restaurants
- Cafes
- Hotels
- Shops
- Canteens
- Market stalls
- Mobile catering vans
- Food delivery vans
*Mobile catering vans must be registered to where the van is stored or kept overnight.
Registrations are just a way of informing the local authority that you prepare or handle food – there is no certificate involved in this process.
The information that you provide will be entered onto our database and also the food register. Part of this register is open to the public but NOT any personal information you provide. Businesses can request to see or receive a copy of the register entry.
Please note: Applications must be completed at least 28 days before you start trading.

Important information
- We are unable to refuse to register you and there is no fee charged for your registration.
- If you are holding a one-off event, you may not need to register.
- Once you have registered, your business will be allocated to an officer for inspection. This may not be within your first few months of opening so please do not be concerned if you don’t receive an inspection straight away.
