In 2023/24, the additional £378K was used to bring forward the Phase 1 resurfacing of Weston Road which was a scheme worth £600k. The funding contributed towards the resurfacing of approximately 1.5km within the Meir and Weston Coyney areas. Weston Road is a principal road that runs from the A50 through to the city boundary with Staffordshire County and provides a major link from Stoke-on-Trent towards Leek, Buxton and Macclesfield. As this network serves a high volume of traffic, the resurfacing works were done overnight to minimise disruption during peak periods.

In the next financial year, 2024/25, the additional £378K will be used to contribute towards the Phase 2 resurfacing of Weston Road, completing the full length between the A50 and the city boundary at a cost of circa £595k. Phase 2 has the added challenge of being narrow in part, whereby the carriageway surrounding some of the gully grating has a history of damage due to large vehicle over running. The funding will allow for additional drainage works to be carried out in the form of either beany blocks or weir kerbs, removing the gratings from the carriageway.

Highways maintenance innovation in Stoke-on-Trent – now and in the future
