Performance, Rights and Information

Tenant Rights

As a tenant you have certain rights related to your home, and the facilities and services provided by Stoke-on-Trent City Council as your landlord. These rights support you in having a safe and secure living environment, and help ensure services are fair, transparent and equitable.

Your rights as a Stoke-on-Trent City Council tenant include:

  • You have the right to a home that meets the government’s Decent Homes Standard
  • Stoke-on-Trent City Council as a landlord has an obligation to comply with health and safety legislation
  • You have the right to a home that is fit for human habitation
  • You have the right to receive notice of a proposed visit to carry out repairs or maintenance or to view the condition and state of repair of the premises
  • Disabled tenants have the right to reasonable adjustments

You also have other rights, which are explained in your Tenancy Agreement Booklet and the Tenancy Policy

The Right to Manage, where applicable, gives council tenants the right to take over the management of their homes, for example from organising repairs to ensuring grounds maintenance is undertaken. When tenants join together to manage their own homes they set up what is known as a ‘tenant management organisation’.
