Maintenance work: Arbourfield Drive

Frequently asked questions

Why are the maintenance works needed to this bridge?

The bridge waterproofing system and joints have deteriorated over time and now require replacing to prevent water seeping through the bridge deck and causing structural damage to structural elements of the bridge. If the works are not carried out, the bridge could deteriorate to the point where a weight or lane restriction may be placed over the bridge which would have a significant impact on local residents and business who access Eaton Park.

What works are being undertaken?

The scheme involves the following works:

  • Replacement of waterproofing and bridge joints
  • Carriageway resurfacing
  • Footway resurfacing
  • New kerbs
  • Pointing repairs to the parapets
  • Concrete repairs to the deck.

What will change?

There will be no changes to the road layout on completion of the works; the works are solely required to maintain the bridge.

Will the road be shut during the works?

The road won’t be shut but will be temporarily restricted to one lane running over the bridge during the works.

What traffic management will be present?

Lane closures over the bridge will be controlled by traffic signals. Work will be carried out to one half of the bridge at a time, the lane been worked on will be closed. The other lane will remain open. Once the work to one side has been completed work shall be switched to the other half of the bridge.

Will pedestrians be able to cross the bridge?

Yes, one footway/pavement will remain open to pedestrians during the work.

Will the puffin (pelican) crossing remain in place?

The puffin crossing will be switched off during the works.Temporary pedestrian crossing points will be provided. The puffin crossing will be switched on following completion of the works.

What will the effect on traffic be during the works?

Some traffic disruption is expected during the works and delays to journey times are expected.

During school opening and closing times traffic in the vicinity of the bridge is already heavy and considerable delays are expected around these times. If journeys can be avoided at school opening and closing times this is advised.

Will the footpath underneath the bridge remain open?

Yes, the works are not anticipated to affect this footpath.

When will the works start?

The works are programmed to start on Monday 24 June 2024.

How long will the works will take?

The works are programmed to last for 10 weeks.

What measures are being taken to reduce the traffic disruption?

The works are scheduled to be undertaken in the 6 week summer holidays. However, as the programme is 10 weeks not all work can be carried out within the holiday period. We are working with the school in order to reduce the amount of traffic outside the school at opening and closing time.

Will parking be affected?

Parking on or located nearby the bridge will not be possible during the works as this would block the road.

Will the bus service be effected?

The bus service is planned to operate as normal.

Are the works part of a wider project?

No.

Who will be carrying out the works?

The works will be carried out by Galliford Try Infrastructure, a term Highways Contractor used by the city council.
