Section 171 Licence

If you need to temporarily dig up the highway, for example when building a wall or putting in footings for a new building, you will need to apply for approval to do so. To apply for this licence please email: streetworks@stoke.gov.uk, to request an application form.

A 'highway' is a road, verge, footway, public footpath or bridleway.

Please note: A Section 50 Streetworks Licence is required if works are in relation to the installation of apparatus (unless acting under a statutory right).

The standard lead in time is 20 days please see below details on fast track applications.

An additional application for temporary traffic signals will be required where they are necessary.

Section 58

Work is not allowed on some roads in the city due to Section 58 restrictions. View information on Section 58 to see if there is a restriction in force on the road you wish to work on before completing a Section 50 application.

Fees:

The following fees will apply for this licence:

Application Fees Fee
Permit to dig in an unclassified street and not in a pedestrianised zone (up to 200m). £250.00
Permit to dig in a classified street (A, B or C) or in a pedestrianised zone (up to 200m). £350.00
For each additional 200m length of road. £150.00
Fast Track Fee – Where approval sought quicker than the standard lead in time of 20 days. This option is available where an application is made between 5 and 20 days before required and when the authority agrees to accelerate the process. £50.00
Cancellation Fee Fee
Cost per permit for abortive works where permit processed but works cancelled before they were due to start (must be cancelled the working day before the proposed start date). No refund payable if cancelled after the proposed works start date and inspections have been scheduled. NB: failure to cancel a permit prior to the proposed start will result in a reduced reimbursement. £80.00
Unlicensed Activity Fee
Unlicensed activity, visits arising from complaints, cost of action, etc., (in addition to cost of licence). £80.00
