In the 19th and 20th centuries the schools of art in Stoke-on-Trent greatly enhanced the quality of the designs in the local pottery factories. The majority of the students attended classes in the evening as they were already earning their living in junior roles in the industry. It's thanks to the schools of art that such famous pottery designers as Charlotte Rhead, Susie Cooper and Clarice Cliff became household names.
