Volunteering in the city

Volunteering makes a real difference to the communities of Stoke-on-Trent. Not only will you meet new people, you will be able to learn new skills and gain experience in a particular field or area.

Opportunities with Stoke-on-Trent City Council

We believe that everyone has a role to play in making our city a great place to live, work and visit. If you have knowledge to share or are interested in making an impact for people, join us!  It doesn’t matter if you only have an hour to give, we would love to hear from you.   

We welcome anyone over the age of 16 to start volunteering with us. There are many ways to get involved including local events like the Potters 'Arf or volunteer in your local library by helping with reading and digital skills.

Dimensions Leisure Centre volunteers - Catering and Dry Recreation Assistant

We are looking for volunteers to come and join the leisure team at Dimensions. 

Roles include: Preparing and serving food, washing crockery and cutlery, cleaning throughout the centre, assist visitors in the centre and possible minor maintenance.

Date and time: Monday to Sunday - various times throughout the day

Reading Friends Group Facilitators (SOT Libraries)

We are looking for volunteers to become a reading friends facilitator. Reading friends share short stories, poems and other works as a group. 

Roles include: Helping people to enjoy stories in an accessible way. Also help residents to feel part of a community.

Digital Champions (SOT Libraries)

We are looking for digital champions to suport residents with digial technology and helping them to get online.

Roles include: Helping residents to gain basic IT skills including Microsoft Word, the internet and help setting up an email.

Care work - Duke Street, Day Opportunities, Various sites

We are looking for volunteers to help support adults with learning disabilities and people with mental ill health to enjoy a fulfilled day.

Roles include:

  • Supporting and facilitating activities
  • Activity planning
  • Food and drink preperation
  • Enabling individuals to pursue employment, interests and hobbies

Countryside team volunteer - various sites

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our team on Wednesday mornings. The role can vary based on the season..

Summer: litter picking , vegetation management,  path work and general maintenance

Winter: restoration and maintenance of heathland and scrub. Involving the cutting and removal of trees from within the heathland.

Outdoor clothing, boots and work clothes are essential.

Date and time: Wednesday morning 10.15am - 12.30pm.

Hanley Park – Gardening Volunteers

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join us on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Hanley Park. The roles in the park vary depending on the season.

Summer: Litter picking, weeding, general maintenance.

Winter: Litter picking, clearing pathways, general maintenance.

Outdoor clothing, steel toe capped boots and work clothes are essential.

Date and time: Tuesday and Thursday 10am – 2pm

Independent Education Appeal Panel Member

We are looking for volunteers to sit as independent members on our education admission appeal panels and/or our independent review panels for school exclusions. 

Roles include: You would be required to read paperwork and attend hearings to consider representations from parents/guardians in respect of decisions that have been taken about their child’s admission to/exclusion from a school.  You will be required to make informed and reasoned decisions with fellow panel members. Full training will be provided.

Date and time: Appeal panels sit all year round during term time and during normal office hours. Panel members can choose to serve on a panel as few or as many times as they wish throughout the year.
